Houshang Golmakani On The Art of Movie Posters

The Art of Movie Posters (book, 2014)

The Art of Movie Posters is the first book in Persian exploring the history, schools and styles and the peaks in the art of designing posters for the movies. Accompanied by 400 illustrations, from the very first film poster designed in 1895 to promote the first public screening of the Lumière brothers to the 21th century's digital posters, the book is conceived in chapters each narrating the history of this popular art in a different way: decade-by-decade, country-by-country, and there is also focus on designers and directors.

The author of the book, Ehsan Khoshbakht, is an Iranian film critic and curator who has worked and published in the Middle East, Europe and North America and some of the rare posters in the book come from his photographing of private collections in Tehran.

Film Ads In Iran#31: Elvis

Fun in Acapulco

I was born in a family of six with two sisters close to my age who naturally became my playmates and fellow expeditionary. We discovered many things together and among the things we innocently loved there was Elvis. We had few Elvis films on VHS, but our favorite was a long anthology film of his Hollywood career, assembled and edited by Andrew Salt. Yes, the place was Islamic Republic of Iran and the time, 1990s when the country was slowly recovering from the devastation of a war.

Elvis Presley films were shown in Persian-dubbed version in the pre-revolutionary Iran, but there is no indication that he was as popular in Iran as other places in the world. The above picture and two more below are scans of Elvis film ads in Iran from that period.

To conceive what a weird and sometimes confusing melting pot was the film culture in Iran, I draw your attention to two other films promoted on the first ad (above), one for screening of Jerry Lewis' Leave It Up (who was bigger than Elvis or anyone else in Iran) and the other, quite surrealistically, promoting the Russian version of Hamlet by Grigory Kozinetsev which is indeed a masterpiece.

It can be interpreted as a sign of apathy toward the rock 'n' roll star, as the aforementioned ad introduces Fun In Acapulco as the Ursula Andress' new film ("who caught the world's attention by Dr. No," the ad reads) rather than leaning on Elvis as the major box-office drive of the film.

Film Ads In Iran#29: Nightcomers

The Nightcomers (1971) starring Marlon Brando and directed by Michael Winner, the English director who passed away last month, shown at the Tehran's uptown film theater Shahre Farang. Before the revolution (also after that), there was no organization for rating and certifying films in Iran (sure there was censor, but once films passed the censor, theaters had no obligation to follow any age restriction), but posters were using fake age limits as a sort of publicity. As this ad shows, the publicity campaign has used "no under-18 is allowed into the theater"  to arouse curiosity and draw more audience to the film, especially those of under eighteen! Film Ads in Iran#28: Italian Sex Comedies

In Iran of the 1970s, sex comedies, as well as martial art films, were drawing huge number of people to the movie theaters. The cinema whose main attractions were Lando Buzzanca (picture above), Bruce Lee and Barbara Bouchet soon changed the way Iranian filmmakers of the Pahlavi era saw their films. They felt something was missing, so cartoonish violence with prehistoric sound effects (produced by smashing pumpkins!) and more reckless sex scenes found their way into Iranian cinema. This new trend, soon, was crushed with a popular revolution which one of its objections was obscenity and prostitution of the movies. The same crowd who made long queues to see Bouchet's naked breasts (picture above) started to burn down the theaters. Here I have included some original newspaper advertisement for Italian sex comedies, shown in Iran with titles as stupid as The Nymphomaniac Woman and the Frigid Man or The Shy Priest and the Voluptuous Woman:
